Wembanyama 'rested hard as hell' after Summer League

San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama made good use of his downtime following Summer League.

Wembanyama, the No. 1 pick of the 2023 draft, told reporters at the Spurs’ media day Monday that he rested as much as possible to prepare for his first NBA training camp.

“I did get away from pretty much everything for some time, for a couple weeks,” Wembanyama said, according to KSAT 12. “That restored me totally. I often like to think the best players are the ones who work the hardest, but you also need to know how to rest the hardest. And I rested hard as hell for a couple weeks.”

Since returning to San Antonio, though, Wembanyama has been in grind mode and said he’s gained 10-15 pounds.

“I’ve been working better than at any other moment in my life. Harder, but also smarter,” he said. “I think this offseason will make a difference, not just for the upcoming season, but the work we’ve done is gonna impact my next few years.”

Wembanyama played in two Summer League contests. The Frenchman skipped the FIBA World Cup.

The Spurs opened training camp Tuesday and will play their first preseason game Oct. 9 against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
