Report: Thunder waive 17-year veteran Rudy Gay

The Oklahoma City Thunder are waiving veteran forward Rudy Gay after acquiring him earlier in the offseason, sources told The Athletic’s Shams Charania.

The Utah Jazz dealt Gay to the Atlanta Hawks in the John Collins trade in early July, and he was then sent to Oklahoma City a few days later in a move that sent Patty Mills back to Atlanta.

Gay holds career averages of 15.8 points and 5.6 rebounds per game split between the Memphis Grizzlies, Toronto Raptors, Sacramento Kings, San Antonio Spurs, and Jazz.

The 36-year-old averaged 19.6 points per game over an eight-year stretch from 2008-15. However, he’s failed to top 8.1 points a night in his last two campaigns, both with Utah.

Waiving Gay still leaves the Thunder four guaranteed roster spots over the maximum allotment.
