Report: NBA expected to enforce stricter resting policy

The NBA’s competition committee has recommended stricter guidelines regarding teams resting their players, sources told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

The guidelines would apply for nationally televised games and clubs that sit multiple stars in the same contest, Wojnarowski reports.

Based on discussions between team and league personnel, a star is someone who’s made an All-Star or All-NBA team in the past three seasons, The Athletic’s Shams Charania reports.

The league would be able to sanction clubs with bigger financial fines for violating the resting rules, adds Wojnarowski.

Teams would be docked $100,000 for their first rule break, $250,000 for a second, and $1 million more than the previous penalty for each additional violation, Wojnarowski reports.

The NBA’s Board of Governors will vote Wednesday on the new measures, Wojnarowski adds. They’re reportedly expected to approve the rules.

The reported changes are among the Association’s latest efforts to reduce load management.

In April, the NBA and NBPA agreed on a new Collective Bargaining Agreement that included a stipulation requiring players to make at least 65 appearances in order to be eligible for the top individual awards.
