Pelicans' Murphy to miss start of season with torn meniscus

Trey Murphy III will be cleared to return to basketball activities in 10-12 weeks after suffering a partially torn meniscus, the New Orleans Pelicans announced Thursday.

Murphy underwent a partial meniscectomy and received a biologic injection in his left knee after he reportedly sustained the injury during a workout Tuesday.

The 23-year-old averaged 14.5 points during his standout sophomore season, which represented an increase of nearly 10 per game. He also showed off range from deep, making 2.6 threes per contest while shooting 40.6% percent beyond the arc.

The No. 17 overall pick in 2021 helped the Pelicans finish 42-40 last season, but they were eliminated by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the play-in tournament.

New Orleans starts its season Oct. 28 with a home contest against the New York Knicks.
