Pelicans' Green: We need to give Zion ball more after 1 shot in 1st half

The New Orleans Pelicans need to do a better job getting Zion Williamson the ball, head coach Willie Green said Thursday.

Williamson scored four points on 2-of-3 shooting and got four rebounds and two assists in 22 minutes during the team’s 120-87 blowout loss to the Houston Rockets on Thursday night.

The 23-year-old only shot the ball once in the first half. Head coach Willie Green said the Pelicans “have to get the ball in his hands,” according to Christian Clark of

“We need to talk about it. … Hadn’t put any sort of half-court sets in yet for him,” Green said. “But we need to put the ball in his hands. We know that. That’s something we will continue to do.”

Williamson has played in two preseason contests since missing 53 games last season with a hamstring injury. He recorded 12 points in 15 minutes against the Orlando Magic on Tuesday.

In 114 career games over four seasons, Williamson averaged 25.8 points, seven rebounds, and 3.6 assists. New Orleans went 42-40 last season but was eliminated in the play-in tournament.

“This group hasn’t played much together,” Green said. “We expect there will be some bumps in the road. But I told our guys: ‘Every night, we have to go out and compete.'”

The Pelicans have two more preseason contests – against the Atlanta Hawks and Magic – before kicking off their campaign versus the Memphis Grizzlies on Oct. 25.
