KD: There's room for '4 or 5 new teams' in NBA

Kevin Durant has a the-more-the-merrier philosophy when it comes to NBA expansion.

While speaking at CNBC and Boardroom’s Game Plan Summit on Tuesday, the Phoenix Suns star said he believes the NBA could support several more franchises.

“The NBA is so huge, but I don’t know if the other owners would want to split that up amongst new teams, things are going so well. But yeah, I feel like there could be four or five new teams,” Durant said. “Everybody loves basketball.”

He added, “I was a part of an expansion-like franchise in OKC, and to see where that city was in 2008, 2009 and to see where it is now – there’s like four or five skyscraper buildings that I would’ve never thought would be there. Resort-like hotels, trolleys through the city. … A lot of that is because of the injection of a sports franchise into that city. So I feel like a lot of cities around the United States probably are calling Adam Silver to bring a team to their city.”

Durant was selected No. 2 overall in the 2007 NBA Draft by the Seattle SuperSonics, who relocated to Oklahoma City and became the Thunder following his rookie season.

The 34-year-old named Seattle as the “ideal spot” for an expansion franchise while discussing his desire to own an NBA team one day.

Silver touched on expansion at Summer League earlier this month, saying the league will discuss the matter once its new media deals are done. Seattle and Las Vegas are expected to be among the potential markets explored.
