Ex-NBAer Olden Polynice compares Wembanyama to Shawn Bradley

San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama has been touted by many as a generational talent, but not everyone is buying into the hype.

During an appearance on Fox Sports’ “The Odd Couple” with Chris Broussard and Martin Weiss, former NBA player Olden Polynice suggested that people should temper their expectations for the 7-foot-4 Frenchman and compared him to Shawn Bradley.

“He hopes to be better than Shawn Bradley in my opinion,” Polynice said of Wembanyama. “I’m serious … I’m not even putting him in Yao Ming category.”

Bradley, who ranks among the tallest players in NBA history at 7-foot-6, averaged 8.1 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per game during his 12-year career.

Polynice went on to explain that he thinks Wembanyama will have a difficult time replicating his play from overseas in the NBA.

“(Gregg) Popovich is gonna put him in the right situation, I know that, but instinctively he’s gonna wanna bring the ball up,” Polynice said. “Pop is not going to let a 7’5” guy bring the ball up, I don’t care what anybody’s saying right now.

“It’s that marriage – the honeymoon. We’re all in the honeymoon phase, okay? He hasn’t had a two-week road trip. He hasn’t done any of this stuff so he doesn’t know what to expect.”

Wembanyama made his debut for the Spurs earlier this month, appearing in two games at Summer League. He had a rough first outing but bounced back in his second game, posting 27 points, 12 rebounds, and three blocks.
