Edwards: T-Wolves haven't yet done 'what we're supposed to do'

Anthony Edwards believes the Minnesota Timberwolves have more to show.

“We haven’t really (done) what we’re supposed to do yet,” Edwards told The Athletic’s Shams Charania. “This year, we’re going to be a lot better.”

Edwards has set some goals for the Timberwolves next season, including winning 50 games, helping center Karl-Anthony Towns play at an MVP level, developing Jaden McDaniels into the league’s best 3-and-D player, and getting Rudy Gobert a Defensive Player of the Year honor.

“I just got team goals, (my) individual stuff will come when you win as a team,” he said.

The T-Wolves performed below expectations last season after acquiring former DPOY Gobert in the offseason. They finished 42-40 with Towns missing 53 games due to a calf injury, and they were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the eventual champion Denver Nuggets.

The 21-year-old took a step forward with Towns sidelined, leading the team in scoring with a career-high 24.6 points. Minnesota rewarded Edwards with a five-year, $260-million contract in July.

Edwards is excited to prove he’s worth the investment and is ready to be a leader on the team.

“I think leadership is (displayed) through action,” he said. “You put the work in everyday. If you put the work in on the court, in the weight room, in front of your teammates, and just show them that you’re willing to sacrifice anything to win the game, they’ll listen to you. And it’s vice versa. I’m willing to take coaching from my teammates and listen to what they have to tell me.”

The 2020 first overall pick added he’s going to wear No. 5 for the upcoming season. Edwards wore the number in his single season at Georgia. Forward Kyle Anderson will take Edwards’ No. 1, according to The Athletic’s Jon Krawczynski.
