Cavs' Rubio announces break from basketball to focus on mental health

Cleveland Cavaliers and Spanish national team guard Ricky Rubio will take a break from basketball to focus on his mental health, he announced in a statement via FEB.

“I have decided to stop my professional activity to take care of my mental health,” Rubio wrote. “I want to thank all the support I have received from the FEB for understanding my decision. Today, #Family makes more sense than ever. Thank you. I ask that my privacy is respected to be able to face these moments and to be able to give more information when the time is right.”

The 32-year-old was expected to play for Spain in the upcoming FIBA World Cup before his announcement. Spain has four exhibition games remaining before the start of the World Cup on Aug. 25.

Rubio has been playing internationally for the Spanish senior national team since 2008 when he helped the squad earn silver at the Beijing Olympics.

It’s unclear if Rubio will be back for the NBA season. He has two years and $12.5 million remaining on his contract with the Cavaliers.

Rubio returned from a torn ACL in January and played in 33 contests for Cleveland last season.
