76ers 'expect' Harden back for training camp despite media day absence

James Harden isn’t present at the Philadelphia 76ers’ media day as he awaits a trade from the franchise, president of basketball operations Daryl Morey confirmed Monday, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Keith Pompey.

“We expect him to participate (at training camp) like every other player,” said Morey.

The executive said the franchise is working with Harden’s representatives to find the best solution “for the 76ers and for all parties,” according to The Athletic’s David Aldridge.

Morey added: “In terms of a trade, I will continue to work on those fronts. If he’s here, then coach (Nick Nurse) will work with him on the court. I think it’s pretty straightforward.”

Harden is upset the franchise hasn’t moved him to the Los Angeles Clippers, sources told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. The 76ers reportedly haven’t made progress with any franchise over a deal.

Harden opted into his $35.6-million player option in June for the 2023-24 season hoping for a trade. In August, Philadelphia took the veteran guard off the trade market with the intention of bringing him back for training camp.

The 10-time All-Star called Morey “a liar” in August and said he never wanted to play under him again. The NBA fined Harden $100,000 for his public comments. Last week, Harden threw a party in Houston that featured a sign saying “Daryl Morey is a liar.”

Morey described the change in his relationship with Harden as “hard,” according to Aldridge.

“I think there are many people who’ve worked with him for some time, but I’ve been right there with anyone else. … I like him as a person,” Morey said. “It was hard that he felt like that was the right course of action for him at that point.”

The 76ers begin their training camp Tuesday at Colorado State.
